In Afghanistan, many young girls are not able to participate in sports. Cultural and religious norms, along with other factors such as safety concerns and years of warfare, have resulted in limited athletic and recreational opportunities for women and girls, especially those who come from impoverished neighborhoods. But there is a new generation of Afghan girls who believe they can do anything. LEARNING TO SKATEBOARD IN A WARZONE (IF YOU’RE A GIRL) tells the story of young Afghan girls learning to read, write—and skateboard—in Kabul.

Carol Dysinger
Carol Dysinger directed the short documentary Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone (If You're a Girl) which won the best documentary short film award at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival. Dysinger is also known for her feature-length documentary Camp Victory, Afghanistan, compiled from more than 300 hours of footage collected over three years. It premiered in competition at SXSW 2010 and was screened at the MoMA, Doc Fortnight, and the Human Rights Watch film festival. Funded by the Sundance Doc Fund and Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the film later appeared on public television. Before directing documents, Professor Dysinger edited many documentaries and feature films, including Deadline for Big Mouth Productions, Rain for Lola Films, Santitos for Springall Pix, and Punk which was nominated for an Emmy.
